OPOL Method: One Parent, One Language

OPOL Method: One Parent, One Language

The OPOL method is probably one of the most common language strategies used by parents raising bilingual children. It is as simple as it sounds, one person speaks one language to the child. This method involves having the parent who speaks the minority language, to consistently speak to their child using this language.

Benefits of implementing the (OPOL) method

With the OPOL method, the child knows exactly which parent speaks what language to him, so there is less chance for confusion. The child will also have plenty of exposure to the second language. He will develop both languages independently, preventing him from mixing both languages.

By implementing OPOL you can also be able to quickly detect your child’s linguistic gap between the majority and minority language, through the child’s language mixing. For example, when your child fully responds in his minority language, he uses a word from the majority language to fill in his lack of a lexical item in the minority language. You can quickly notice that he does not know the specific word and can teach it to him.

Additional support to OPOL

Sometimes OPOL requires additional support besides the one he receives from his parents. Support from playgroups, visits from family, a trip to the country, or a native speaking nanny or au-pair, could help tremendously for your child understanding. Knowing that his parents aren’t the only ones who speak this language will help him expand the child’s cultural competence.
